KNUT Appeals to TSC for More Teachers in Special Needs Schools

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is urging the Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC) to post more teachers to special schools across the country.

The KNUT Executive Secretary for the Koibatek/Mogotio Branch, Francis Bundotich, emphasized the critical shortage of staff in these institutions while enrollment numbers continue to rise.

A spot-check in the Rift Valley region highlighted the severity of the situation, revealing that some schools have over 400 students but fewer than ten teachers.

Francis Bundotich reported that despite thousands of trained special education teachers in the country, many remain jobless for years.

He expressed concern that special schools have been overlooked for a long time, resulting in a significant lack of staffing.

Bundotich asserted that the continued neglect of these institutions is a gross violation of the rights of learners with special needs, who deserve equal access to quality education.

Infrastructure Challenges

In addition to the staffing shortages, Bundotich lamented the poor infrastructure in special schools.

He urged both the national and county governments to address these issues promptly, as the inadequate facilities have significantly disrupted students’ daily activities.

He emphasized the need for immediate government intervention to improve the conditions in which these learners are educated.

KNUT is calling on the government to take swift action to improve both the staffing and infrastructure in special schools.

Bundotich underscored the necessity of addressing these challenges to ensure that students with special needs receive the education they are entitled to.

He believes that a coordinated effort from all levels of government is essential to rectify these longstanding issues.
