KNUT Condemns TSC Teacher Promotions, Calls for Revocation and Fresh Interviews.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Nandi branch, has criticized the latest teacher promotions, branding the exercise as flawed and untrustworthy. The branch’s Executive Secretary, Boniface Tenai, expressed concern that many eligible educators were excluded despite satisfying all necessary qualifications.

While addressing the media in Kapsabet town, Tenai stressed that the exclusion of unions in the interview process contributed to the irregularities. He emphasized that KNUT had long advocated for promotions, but the recent approach failed to meet expectations. He insisted that union involvement in future interviews is essential to uphold the integrity of such exercises.

“The recent promotion of teachers was a sham. Although we have been demanding promotions, this is not how we wanted it done. In the future, the unions should be involved in the interview to ensure the process is above board,” he said.

Tenai noted that teachers who were unfairly left out of the process are now experiencing demoralization, which he warned could hinder their performance once schools resume. The union now insists on the cancellation of the current promotions and calls for a fresh, transparent process.

Appeal for Legislative Intervention

He urged the National Assembly Education Committee to step in, asserting that the committee holds the mandate to resolve the matter. According to him, many qualified educators were sidelined, which the union finds unacceptable and unjust.

“Many qualified teachers were left out, and this is unacceptable. As a union, we demand that the promotions be revoked and the interviews done afresh. We also appeal for the intervention of the National Assembly Education Committee because the committee has the power to handle this matter,” added Tenai.

In addition to addressing promotions, the union appealed to parents to be vigilant with their children during the school holidays. They highlighted that instances of indiscipline tend to escalate during this period and require proactive parenting.

The promotion of 25,252 teachers has stirred varying opinions. The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) also raised objections, arguing that the distribution of vacancies overlooked differences in teacher populations. They claimed that this oversight led to an imbalanced system that neglected fairness in both merit and workload.
