KNUT Demands Timely Payment and Improved Compensation for KNEC Contracted Professionals.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to promptly compensate all contracted professionals involved in the country’s examination process.
This includes teachers, center managers, invigilators, supervisors, markers, and security personnel. The union emphasized the need for immediate payment once the examination tasks are completed, along with a review to increase the compensation package.
Malel Lang’at, the union’s first National Vice Chairman, highlighted the demoralizing impact of delayed payments on the professionals contracted by KNEC. He expressed these concerns after attending the KNUT Thika Branch Annual General Meeting (AGM) and by-election.
Lang’at noted that the remuneration is not only insufficient but also often delayed, underscoring the urgency for KNEC to both increase the pay and ensure timely disbursement.

“The payment to KNEC contracted officials is little and usually delays; it’s high time KNEC reviewed the pay and also pay it immediately,” said Lang’at.
Request for Adequate School Funding
In addition to calling for better compensation, Lang’at urged the National Treasury to allocate capitation funds to schools in the standard ratios of 50:30:20.
He stressed that this distribution is essential to help head teachers and principals adequately prepare for the upcoming Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Examination (KCSE), both scheduled to begin next month.

Lang’at also called on the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government to ensure security in troubled regions, including Boni Forest and bandit-prone areas in the Rift Valley and North Eastern regions, during the examination period.
He emphasized the importance of securing these areas to facilitate a smooth and safe exam process.
