KNUT Finalizes Teachers Strike Preparations, Awaits Signal from Oyuu
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) grassroots officials have indicated their readiness to participate in a strike, should their Secretary General, Collins Oyuu, call for it.
This sentiment was echoed by Kipkelion KNUT Executive Secretary, David Bore, who highlighted that branch officials have already convened with teachers and are merely awaiting Oyuu’s directive.
Meetings Held, Awaiting the Signal
In Kericho town, Bore criticized the government for intentionally neglecting to implement the final phase of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
He reported that branch officials had organized meetings with their members, who are fully prepared to take action at a moment’s notice. He emphasized that they are now just waiting for the go-ahead from the Secretary General.
“As branch officials, we have held meetings with our members and they are ready like yesterday. We are only waiting for the greenlight from SG,” he noted.

Bore also expressed concern over potential disruptions to the academic calendar, noting that such interruptions have occurred in the past. He urged the government to take measures to avoid these disruptions, stating that it is within their power to do so.
Criticism of Government’s Excuses
He pointed out that the CBA had been agreed upon before the Finance Bill was even introduced and argued that it was inappropriate for the government to use the rejection of the bill as an excuse to delay the CBA’s implementation.
Bore emphasized that essential services like education should not be compromised by such excuses.

Bore called on the National Treasury and the Teachers Service Commission to address the issue urgently. He questioned why the government often waits until the threat of a strike becomes imminent before taking action.
As schools prepare to reopen at the end of the month, teachers are insisting on the implementation of the final phase of the CBA and are threatening to strike if their demands are not met.
