KNUT Insists on Teachers Strike Over Delayed CBA Implementation
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is preparing to initiate a strike if the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) fails to implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that was previously signed.
Kisii South Executive Secretary Jared Mariera has indicated that this action might be necessary due to the prolonged delay in fulfilling the agreement.
Jared Mariera emphasized that the delay in implementing the agreement is unacceptable and insisted that teachers are prepared to resort to industrial action, which they view as their most potent strategy.
He expressed that their leaders have demonstrated that the government often only responds to forceful measures and that teachers will use such tactics to demand their rights unless the agreement is honored.
Criticism of Government and TSC
During a sub-county meeting focused on empowering female teachers, Mariera, accompanied by Chairperson Beatrice Mauti, criticized the government for neglecting teachers and questioned the TSC’s sluggishness in promoting them.

He voiced his frustration with the government’s handling of the matter, accusing them of treating teachers unfairly.
The meeting, which included notable attendees such as Bomas of Kenya CEO Ednah Kangwana and Gucha KNUT Executive Secretary Lucy Machuki, encouraged female teachers to pursue leadership positions.
The message was clear: female teachers should actively seek elective posts to ensure their voices are heard in society, mirroring the influence held by their male counterparts.
Advocacy for Girls’ Protection
Dr. Magdalene Gesare, an expert in Gender-Based Violence (GBV) interventions, urged female teachers to take a leading role in safeguarding young girls from societal issues.
She stressed that, as both mothers and educators, they have a unique understanding of the challenges faced by girls and are well-positioned to offer guidance and support.

She appealed to all Woman Representatives nationwide to unite and collaborate in empowering girls, aiming to create a significant positive change within the country.
Gesare encouraged female teachers to empathize with the girls’ experiences and assist them in navigating their social journeys toward adulthood.
