KNUT Push for Increased TSC Budget for Teacher Promotions and Recruitment.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has appealed to the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee to allocate additional funds to TSC. The aim is to enable the promotion and employment of more teachers across the country.

In a meeting with union officials in Kilifi, Knut Secretary-General Collins Oyuu turned his attention to issues surrounding acting head teachers and deputies. He advised teachers in grades C2 and C3 who are acting in administrative roles not to expect promotions under the present  the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) framework.

Mr Oyuu pointed out that many acting head teachers were never officially interviewed by TSC for those roles. He warned, “If you are in grade C2 or C3, forget about promotions. Your time is being wasted. Just focus on teaching and stop acting.” He explained that promotion interviews require certain grades, and teachers who do not meet these qualifications should not hope for advancement.

He further criticized the practice of assigning teachers acting roles without clear prospects for advancement. According to him, when interviews are advertised, those lacking the appropriate grade are often overlooked despite already performing in those roles.

He urged teachers not to be misled into clinging to acting positions when they are not eligible for formal promotions. “Be bold enough,” he said. “If your grade doesn’t allow you to qualify for an interview, return the acting letter and continue teaching.”

Mr Oyuu also cautioned that remaining in an acting position without the required qualifications only leads to frustration. He stressed that many qualified teachers are available but are not placed in acting roles because of administrative oversights.

He concluded by advising teachers not to hold on to acting titles simply for prestige, warning, “When the real opportunity comes, you will be disappointed if you cannot compete.”
