KNUT Push for More Teacher Promotions and Increased School Capitation.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has voiced concerns over the recent teacher promotion exercise conducted by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Vice National Chairman Malel Langat criticized the process, asserting that the number of teachers promoted was insufficient and fell short of expectations.

While addressing journalists in Kericho town, Langat pointed out that several sub-counties were allocated very few slots, with some receiving only one, a situation he described as alarming.

He acknowledged that the promotion initiative was a positive step but maintained that the low numbers were unsatisfactory.

Langat emphasized that numerous teachers had pursued further education, attaining higher academic qualifications, yet they remained in the same job grades for years.

He urged immediate intervention to ensure that these teachers receive promotions, allowing them to advance in their careers and improve their livelihoods.

He further stressed that the stagnation in promotions was demotivating and affected teachers’ ability to provide for their families. As representatives of teachers, the union demanded that these professionals be promoted accordingly to recognize their academic and career advancements.

Call for Timely School Capitation Release

In addition to addressing promotions, Langat also advocated for the timely and increased disbursement of capitation funds to schools.

He warned that delays in funding had significantly disrupted school operations, raising concerns that some institutions might be forced to shut down prematurely due to financial constraints.

He reminded the government of the previously agreed-upon capitation disbursement formula, which stipulated that funds be released in a 50:30:20 ratio for the first, second, and third terms, respectively. He insisted that the government adhere to this framework to prevent further disruptions in schools.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education assured that the capitation funds would be released before the end of the week, offering hope to schools struggling with financial difficulties.
