KNUT Pushes for Reduced Candidate Requirements in Exam Centers from 30 to 10.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called on education authorities to lower the minimum candidate requirement per exam center from 30 to 10, deeming the current standard a burden on candidates in remote areas.
According to KNUT Chesumei/Nandi Central branch Chairperson Benard Maiyo, rural communities have largely adopted family planning practices, leading to reduced student numbers in local schools.
Maiyo has urged Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang’ to intervene, asking the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to adopt this policy change.
He noted that KNUT had previously made a similar request, emphasizing the hardship faced by students in areas where exam centers are few.

Many students, he said, are compelled to travel long distances to reach centers with the requisite 30 candidates.
Increase in Exam Containers Proposed
Maiyo further advocated for an increase in the number of exam containers in the region to streamline exam distribution and submission processes.
He argued that Kenya has adequate police and administrative personnel to manage the additional containers, which would enhance the efficiency of exam handling and save time.
In addition, KNUT’s local branch praised the smooth start to the ongoing national exams, reporting no cases of absenteeism among candidates.
Separately, the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exams have also commenced successfully in the Bomet region without significant issues.

County Director of Education (CDE) Leonard Ngugi confirmed that no candidates are sitting exams from hospitals, attributing this success to well-coordinated logistics.
He assured the public that plans are in place to maintain this stability, particularly in the Konoin and Bomet Central regions, which are anticipating heavy rains.
