KNUT Secretary-General Calls for the Merger of All Teacher Unions.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called for the consolidation of all teachers’ unions in the country into a single, powerful federation to better champion the rights of educators.
The proposal comes just weeks after KNUT and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) parted ways before a planned nationwide strike, which weakened its impact.
Collins Oyuu, Secretary-General of KNUT, emphasized that the division among teachers’ unions dilutes their bargaining power.
He expressed that a unified federation would amplify the teachers’ collective voice in negotiations with the government.

Oyuu referenced the historical strength of Kenya’s teaching unions, highlighting how a single union once provided a strong representation for teachers.
“We are moving forward to form what we call a Federation of teachers in this country so that teachers speak in one voice.”
He mentioned past legal frameworks like the legal notice 534, which bolstered the union’s influence.
Oyuu acknowledged the difficulties and challenges of managing multiple unions and reiterated that teachers could not afford to be split across different organizations.
