KNUT: Teacher Shortage to Blame for Poor Performance in Kajiado Schools.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary in Kajiado, Elly Korinko, has attributed the declining performance in national examinations within the region to a critical shortage of teachers.
He stated that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) had failed to address the staffing challenges, leaving schools struggling to meet educational demands.
Korinko noted that Namelok Girls Secondary School recently witnessed a student strike over a lack of teachers and substandard meals. Similarly, students from Sajiloni Secondary School staged a walkout earlier in the week, citing inadequate staffing as the primary reason for their protest.
Disruption in Learning
At Erankau Secondary School, parents disrupted learning on Monday as they protested against poor administration and the shortage of subject teachers. They expressed frustrations over the school’s poor academic performance, which they believed was directly linked to these shortcomings.
The school’s Board of Management, supported by local leaders, has repeatedly urged the TSC to implement administrative changes. However, Korinko reported that these pleas have largely gone unaddressed, leaving schools and parents to take matters into their own hands.
Korinko stated that the teacher shortage is a widespread issue affecting schools nationwide, with Kajiado County being a microcosm of the crisis. He explained that frustrated parents at one school had taken action by removing the principal, accusing the TSC of neglecting its responsibilities.
Performance and Teacher Distribution
The following table summarizes the recent disruptions in Kajiado schools due to teacher shortages:
School | Incident | Reason |
---|---|---|
Namelok Girls Secondary | Student strike | Lack of teachers, poor diet |
Sajiloni Secondary | Student walkout | Teacher shortage |
Erankau Secondary | Learning disrupted by parents’ protest | Poor administration, no teachers |
Korinko stated that unless urgent measures are taken, the education standards in Kajiado schools will continue to deteriorate.

Government Accountability
Korinko emphasized the need for the TSC to take swift action, saying parents had grown tired of waiting for solutions. He called on the Commission to prioritize teacher deployment and administrative improvements.
“Parents had to take up action and ejected the Principal. TSC is sleeping on the job,” he said.
A parent at Erankau Secondary School voiced their frustrations, stating, “We have waited for too long, and the TSC keeps ignoring our requests. How can our children perform well under these conditions?”
Korinko concluded by urging education stakeholders to work together to resolve the crisis, stressing that the future of students in Kajiado depended on decisive action.
