KNUT Urges TSC to Employ More Teachers in West Pokot County
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called on the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) to address the significant shortage of teachers in West Pokot County.
Describing the region as marginalized, the KNUT leaders from West Pokot emphasized that there is a deficit of over 2,000 teachers in both primary and secondary schools.
West Pokot Knut secretary Martin Sembelo highlighted the urgent need for more teaching staff, appealing to the TSC to allocate additional slots to West Pokot in the current financial budget, which was announced yesterday.
They pointed out that the county has enough resources to manage the employment of more teachers, but the issue lies in addressing unemployment effectively.
Marginalization Since Independence:
“This is one of the marginalized counties ever be seen since Independence in 1963.” The union stressed the importance of education as a means to equalize opportunities and modernize the region.
KNUT expressed concern over the rising mental health issues among teachers, noting that many are driven to suicide due to the high cost of living and substantial deductions from their salaries for loans and other expenses.
The stress and mental challenges faced by teachers are compounded by their inadequate pay relative to their workload.
Permanent and Pensionable Terms for JSS Teachers:
The executive secretary previously highlighted the need to place Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.

Many JSS teachers, currently under temporary terms, experience significant mental and motivational challenges, impacting their performance and ultimately affecting students’ learning experiences.
The union concluded by urging the government to ensure that counties lagging behind, such as West Pokot, receive the necessary support to reach the level of development and educational provision seen in other parts of the country.
