KUCCPS Clarifies University Course Application Process and Portal Access.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has attributed the delay in opening its portal for university course applications to an ongoing court case.
The delay follows a judgment delivered on December 20 by Justice Chacha Mwita, which declared the new university funding model unconstitutional.
KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Agnes Wahome informed Members of Parliament on Thursday, February 20, that the ruling failed to provide clear guidance on how to handle students, including those already placed in various courses.
In response to the court ruling, Wahome explained that KUCCPS had postponed the portal’s opening to prevent a funding crisis in higher education institutions.
She noted that the lack of clarity in the ruling created uncertainty regarding how to manage both new applicants and students placed in previous years.
The agency opted to delay the process until a resolution was reached to ensure a seamless transition and proper funding allocation.
To address the situation, KUCCPS filed an application requesting a suspension of Justice Mwita’s judgment. Wahome stated that the appeal had been certified as urgent, and the court is expected to issue a ruling next week.

She expressed optimism that the decision would provide the necessary direction for KUCCPS to proceed with university placements without further delays.
TVET and KMTC Applications Unaffected
Despite the suspension of the new funding model, Wahome clarified that it had no impact on course applications for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) institutions.
She assured legislators that the portal remains open for TVET and KMTC applications, allowing students to continue their enrollment process while KUCCPS awaits further guidance on university course placements.
