KUCCPS Outlines Fresh Guidelines for Student Admissions at Universities and TVETs.
With the Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service (KUCCPS) online portal now open, the agency has provided updated instructions to both public and private universities, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, concerning student admissions and programme listings.
Higher education institutions have been directed to display comprehensive programme details prominently. KUCCPS emphasized that this measure aims to help applicants make well-informed decisions during the application period by accessing sufficient information regarding career options and study paths.
The online placement system officially opened on March 28 and will remain accessible until April 30, 2025. The ongoing exercise is meant for students seeking placement in public and private universities, public TVETs, and teacher training colleges (TTCs) across the country.
Eligibility Criteria Clarified by KUCCPS
Only Kenyan citizens are eligible for placement into both public and private universities. KUCCPS stated that, at present, international students are excluded from university placements.
However, non-Kenyans are allowed to apply for specific programmes, including the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education, and courses at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).
KUCCPS reiterated that applicants must have sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), conducted annually by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
Eligibility is further defined by performance thresholds: a minimum grade of C+ (plus) for degree programmes, C- (minus) for diploma courses, and D+ (plus) for certificate programmes. Artisan programmes also require specific minimum qualifications.

During a public briefing held on Tuesday, KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Agnes Wahome addressed concerns from students who were not placed in the programmes they had initially selected.
She explained that this issue is especially common in medical fields, where applicants often concentrate on a few high-demand courses. The resulting competition forces many to be placed in alternative but related programmes.
