KUPPET AGM in Machakos Ends in Disarray AS Expelled Vice Chair Returns, Demands Improved Teacher Allowances.
The annual general meeting of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Machakos ended in disarray as teachers celebrated the return of their Vice Chairperson Yvonne Mutind.
The event, which was marked by jubilant moments, saw teachers openly celebrating the Vice Chair’s comeback, which had been delayed due to prolonged challenges. The celebrations, however, led to some disorder, as the mood of the crowd could not be contained.
The Court halted the decision made by the KUPPET Machakos Branch to expel its Vice Chairperson, Yvonne Mutindi.
Despite the chaotic moments, the Vice Chair expressed gratitude to the judiciary for facilitating their return and called on national leaders to consider including a standing allowance for teachers, citing that teachers often teach while standing and such an allowance would be highly beneficial.

“I’m here courtesy of our judiciary, and we want to urge our national leaders to include standing allowances for teachers,” he said.
They also advocated for a new allowance for science teachers, acknowledging the risks they face in laboratories.
The meeting also celebrated the historic conversion of 45,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to permanent and pensionable (P&P) status.
This milestone is the largest absorption of post-primary teachers into permanent employment, which was hailed as a significant achievement by the union.
“This is the largest number of post-primary teachers to be absorbed into permanent positions, and we thank the government for this achievement,” the Vice Chair added
Further, the meeting highlighted the announcement of 10,000 new teaching positions expected for post-primary teachers.
The union expressed gratitude to the government for these forthcoming opportunities, marking a hopeful outlook for the teaching profession in the country.

On December 20, 2023, KUPPET Machakos Executive Secretary Musembi Katuku issued a show cause letter to Mutindi, accusing her of violently disrupting the ADC held at Moi International Sports Centre-Indoor Arena in Nairobi on December 16, 2023.
In her response, Mutindi denied the allegations and instead accused Chairman Omboko Milemba of fueling the chaos. She claimed that Milemba referred delegates to a non-existent agenda, which caused confusion and unrest during the conference.
