KUPPET Gives KNEC a Seven-Day Ultimatum to Pay KCSE Examiners.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Kisumu chapter has issued a one-week ultimatum to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to settle payments for teachers who marked last year’s Form Four national examinations.
The union criticized KNEC for exploiting teachers and failing to compensate them for their work.
Area Executive Secretary Zablon Awange strongly condemned KNEC, accusing the council of unfair treatment towards examiners.
He declared that no teacher from the region would participate in future marking exercises unless the outstanding payments were made.
Awange also pointed out that KNEC has trained numerous KUPPET members as examiners, only for them to face immense frustration at the end of the process due to delayed compensation.
Awange further urged KNEC to reconsider the payment rates given to examiners, arguing that the current amount is insufficient. He highlighted that many examiners are compelled to spend their own money to sustain themselves, as the accommodations provided are substandard.
According to him, these conditions have made it increasingly difficult for teachers to continue participating in the marking process.

Scale of 2024 KCSE Examination
The 2024 KCSE exams were conducted in 10,755 centers, with 965,501 candidates sitting for the examinations, marking an increase from 903,138 in 2023. The marking process was extensive, requiring significant manpower and resources.
KNEC CEO Dr. David Njeng’ere confirmed that the Council had engaged 30,370 examiners for the marking of the 2024 KCSE examination papers.
He also noted that the marking exercise took place in 40 designated centers. However, with examiners still awaiting their payments, KUPPET remains firm in demanding immediate action from KNEC to address the issue.
