KUPPET Insists on Educational Expertise for New CS Appointment

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education (KUPPET) has urged President William Ruto to appoint an Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) with a strong background in education.

They believe this will ensure the implementation of policies that enhance the quality of education in the country.

Nakuru County KUPPET Executive Secretary Duncan Macharia and his Laikipia counterpart, Robert Miano, emphasized the need for a CS who can engage with all education stakeholders, including parents, teachers, learners, and unions.

They asserted that such an appointment would be instrumental in spearheading the education sector in Kenya.

Macharia highlighted that KUPPET desires a young, energetic educationist who understands current educational trends and is willing to collaborate harmoniously with stakeholders such as union leaders, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Ministry of Education, and Parent Associations.

Current Issues in the Education Sector

Macharia expressed concerns about numerous amendments in the TSC and Education Acts. He criticized the lack of consultation with stakeholders, particularly teachers, whose careers are directly impacted by these changes.

He stressed the importance of involving all stakeholders, including parents’ associations, in consultations aimed at improving education quality.

Macharia criticized former Education CS Ezekiel Machogu for allowing Members of Parliament to distribute employment letters to friends and relatives at local events.

He insisted that the TSC should fulfill its constitutional mandate of hiring teachers, ensuring that employment opportunities are available to all Kenyans, regardless of their backgrounds.

Speaking at Lamudiak High School in Njoro Sub-county, Nakuru County, Macharia advocated for Junior Secondary School (JSS) learners to be hosted in secondary schools.

He noted that these institutions generally have adequate facilities, such as science and computer laboratories, which are essential for smooth learning.

Laikipia Executive Secretary Robert Miano urged President Ruto to follow the example of former Kenyan Presidents who appointed Education CSs with educational backgrounds.

He cited the positive impacts of former ministers Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi and Prof. George Magoha, whose contributions were widely recognized by Kenyans.
