KUPPET Laments Unpaid Salaries for Narok Intern Teachers Since June.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Narok County has voiced concerns over the prolonged delay in payments to Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns, noting that the affected teachers have endured six months without salaries.
Branch Executive Secretary Charles Ngeno reported that the delayed payments have left many teachers hopeless. He shared that some teachers have faced evictions due to overdue rent, which he described as a shameful situation.
Ngeno cited instances from Narok Central and Trans Mara sub-counties, highlighting that the affected teachers were recruited on permanent and pensionable terms but have not been paid since June.
“We have teachers who recently filled forms to be hired on permanent and pensionable terms. As we speak, those teachers have not been paid since June.”
According to Ngeno, most of these teachers support multiple dependents and are severely demoralized, with accumulating debts causing significant stress.

He noted that Narok West, Narok Central, and Trans Mara sub-counties have the highest numbers of unpaid teachers, adding that the situation is unacceptable.
Consequences of Delayed Payments
The branch executive explained that many interns have lost trust from landlords and creditors, as they have been unable to honor financial obligations.
” We have teachers in Narok Central and Trans Mara who have not been paid. “We want to tell TSC that it is not respectful to hire teachers and allow them stay for 6 months without salaries,” he noted.
Teachers have taken loans on the assurance that they would repay them from expected salaries, but the delays have now eroded their reputation, leaving them feeling disgraced.
KUPPET is calling for immediate release of the unpaid salaries, emphasizing the essential role these teachers play in the education sector.
The union urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to address the issue promptly to prevent further frustration among the teachers.

This appeal from KUPPET follows recent actions by the government, through TSC, which hired 46,000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms and plans to recruit an additional 20,000 teachers by January 2025.
KUPPET insists that newly hired teachers should not be left without salaries for such extended periods.
