KUPPET Members Forcefully Remove Teachers from School Amid Ongoing Strike
In Nyandarua County, a group of Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) members took action on Wednesday, storming Weru Secondary School.
They responded to reports that some teachers were still conducting classes, defying the union’s directive to cease work as part of the ongoing nationwide strike.
The KUPPET officials arrived at the school and questioned the teachers on why they were disregarding the union’s orders. However, they discovered that the teachers instructing the students were employed by the school board in a private capacity, not as public servants.
The officials warned the principal that any teacher reporting to the school should be informed to join the demonstrations at Engineer Town. This incident highlighted the tension between union directives and individual teacher actions.

Court Intervenes in Strike
This confrontation occurred just one day after the High Court intervened in the strike. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) had taken legal action, prompting Justice James Rika of the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nairobi to rule the petition as urgent.
The court ordered KUPPET to suspend its industrial action until the case was heard and determined.
Despite the court order, KUPPET’s Secretary-General, Akelo Misori, remained defiant. On Tuesday, he instructed union members to disregard the ruling and continue the strike. He urged members to stay focused on the strike until a signed return-to-work agreement that addresses their grievances is achieved.

Misori emphasized that the strike was not only about the teachers but also about ensuring quality education for all Kenyan children.
In contrast, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) had called off its strike notice on Sunday, August 25, after successful negotiations with the TSC. This decision left KUPPET as the sole teachers’ union continuing with the strike.
