KUPPET: No school No chalk. Don’t Show Yourself Near Teaching Institutions

The Mombasa branch of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has resolved that their members will not return to work until the government addresses their demands as schools reopen for the third term.

Security officers led by Mvita Sub-County Police Commander Maxwell Agoro disrupted the teachers’ planned protest at Uhuru Gardens on Moi Avenue.

The teachers were chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards when the police intervened. Lynette Kamadi, the Executive Secretary of KUPPET Mombasa Branch, attempted to persuade the police to permit the protest, but the group’s lack of a permit resulted in their denial.

KUPPET’s Key Demands

Kamadi outlined the union’s key demands, emphasizing the importance of the government:

  • Confirm Junior Secondary School teachers to permanent and pensionable terms.
  • Employ an additional 20,000 teachers.
  • Honor the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), instead of offering promissory notes.
  • Stop hiring people for cheap labor and converting teachers to contractual workers.

“We want the government to remit our third-party deductions to our respective banks and institutions to avoid being listed. We also want the government of Kenya to stop hiring people on cheap labor and convert us to contractual workers,” she stated.

Kamadi emphasized the significance of the teaching profession and declared their refusal to become contract workers.

Next Steps and Social Media Strategy

Kamadi advised the teachers to return home and avoid confrontations with the police as they work on securing a permit. She assured them that she would make every effort to obtain the necessary permission.

Kamadi also instructed the teachers to stay away from schools, declaring, “Today, no school, no chalk. Don’t show yourself near any teaching institution.”

The teachers intend to use social media to voice their grievances, sending messages to the top officials at the Teachers Service Commission.
