KUPPET Seeks 100% Salary Increment for Classroom Teachers.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) national leaders have reiterated their unwavering commitment to advocating for a salary increase for teachers.

During the Baringo Branch General Assembly (BGA) held in Kabarnet town, union Assistant National Treasurer Ronald Tonui and National Secretary in charge of Tertiary Institutions Sammy Chelang’a led a meeting with officials from various branches.

They called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to expedite a 100 percent salary increment, particularly for classroom teachers.

Tonui emphasized that while TSC improved the salaries of administrators in 2016, there remains a pressing need to address the plight of classroom teachers to boost their motivation.

He insisted that promotions should align with professionalism and administrative roles, adding that teachers should not feel compelled to take up administrative positions in schools.

Promotion of Teachers

Tonui expressed concern over TSC’s failure to promote over 130,000 eligible teachers, noting that only 36,000 had advanced to the next level—a number he described as inadequate.

He further stated that teachers in acting capacities should receive acting and special duty allowances as compensation for their responsibilities.

Chelang’a urged national officials to remove the pro-rata policy, which he argued was being used to undermine union representatives from regions such as Rift Valley.

He pointed out that divisions within KUPPET headquarters, which arose after a prematurely concluded strike, should not be used as grounds to intimidate officials working to address gender gaps, advocate for People with Disabilities (PWD), and include key stakeholders in decision-making processes.

As part of efforts to improve teacher welfare, the Baringo branch unveiled a new bus during the assembly. This development is expected to aid in advancing the branch’s objectives and supporting its members.
