KUPPET Teachers Threaten Legal Action Over New Constitution Amendments.
Members of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in the North Rift have criticized the recent amendments to the union’s constitution, describing the move as unconstitutional and poorly implemented.
Led by Joyce Koech, the members expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of consultations before the changes were announced.
Speaking in Kapsabet town, Koech accused top union officials of scheming to extend their tenure in office illegally, a move the members vowed to resist.
She emphasized that implementing such significant changes without engaging members was unacceptable and an abuse of authority.
Koech warned that the changes risked alienating members from the union. She stated their intent to challenge the amendments in court, insisting that any constitutional changes should prioritize the interests of members and enhance the union’s operations.

She also argued that the proposed amendments seemed designed to benefit a select few officials, calling on those eligible for retirement to vacate office to make way for fresh leadership.
Grassroots Elections Demanded
Another member, Daisy Kirui, advocated for shelving the changes altogether. She stressed the need for union elections to be conducted at the grassroots level to ensure fairness, transparency, and broader member participation.
According to Kirui, holding elections only at the national level would disenfranchise ordinary members and compromise the democratic process.
Members from various branches in the region also condemned the newly introduced membership fee of KSh200,000, describing it as punitive and a barrier to new members joining the union.

During the recent Annual Delegated Conference held in Vihiga, KUPPET announced amendments to the union’s constitution, including the removal of the age limit for holding national office.
However, these changes have faced significant opposition from members in the North Rift, who insist that any reforms must be inclusive and align with the union’s core values.
