KUPPET Teachers Warn School Principals Urge Parents to Support Strike
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has issued a stern warning to school principals, stating that if the strike fails because principals keep schools open and engage other teachers to cover for those on strike, the principals will be held fully responsible.
KUPPET pointed out that in previous negotiations with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), principals have benefited more than ordinary teachers.
Therefore, they called on principals to cooperate with the strike efforts by ensuring that schools remain closed and that no learning takes place, to increase the strike’s chances of success.
The Kitale branch of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has also issued a strong appeal to parents, urging them to support the ongoing teachers’ strike.
The union expressed concern over the growing inequality between students in public schools and those in private academies, where teaching continues uninterrupted.

The union emphasized that the strike is not only in the interest of teachers but also for the benefit of students, including the children of the striking teachers themselves.
Key Concerns
- Inequality in Education: KUPPET highlighted the unfair competition between students in public schools, who currently lack teachers, and students in private schools, where learning continues. The union is particularly worried about how this disparity will affect students during the selection of pathways for senior secondary education, especially in STEM subjects.
- Call to Parents: KUPPET urged parents to rally behind the teachers’ cause, emphasizing that the fight is for the future of all children, not just those of the teachers.
KUPPET organized demonstrations in major towns of Eldoret, declaring that their strike would persist until the government addresses their grievances.

The protests were spearheaded by Elijah Maiyo, the Uasin Gishu branch secretary of KUPPET, who emphasized the union’s firm stance on the full implementation of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The KUPPET members demonstrated on the streets of Eldoret and subsequently submitted a memorandum detailing their demands to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) office in the town. The union remains resolute in its position, refusing to return to work until all their concerns are adequately addressed.
