KUPPET to TSC: No Teaching Without Meeting Our Demands

Members of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in the Siaya branch have commenced their strike, fulfilling their earlier threat to suspend learning in schools until their demands are addressed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The strike began with demonstrations in Siaya Town, where the teachers expressed their dissatisfaction with the TSC, accusing the commission of reneging on previous agreements and failing to fulfill promises made to them.

Patrick Omondi, the branch Executive Secretary of KUPPET, addressed the press in Siaya town, indicating that teachers are unwilling to accept the promised salary increments until their colleagues in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) are employed on a permanent basis.

He raised concerns that if teachers accept the current offers, it would leave their JSS counterparts in a precarious position, as they were promised permanent and pensionable employment starting from August 1st. However, the situation has changed, with no further communication on the matter from the TSC.

“We strongly demand that our JSS counterparts be confirmed on a permanent and pensionable basis as was agreed,” he said.

Omondi emphasized the union’s firm stance, stating that their JSS counterparts must be confirmed on a permanent and pensionable basis as originally agreed upon. The teachers under KUPPET are also troubled by the increasing reliance on intern teachers by the TSC, which they view as a threat to the teaching profession in the long term.

Key Demands from Teachers

The striking teachers have outlined several key demands that they want the TSC to address:

  • Permanent Employment for JSS Teachers: Confirmation of Junior Secondary School teachers on a permanent and pensionable basis.
  • Remittance of Statutory Deductions: Immediate remittance of all third-party statutory deductions to the respective financial institutions.
  • Medical Cover Alignment: Proper alignment of teachers’ medical cover under a functional and effective scheme.

KUPPET members have made it clear that they won’t compromise on their demands until they and the TSC reach a satisfactory resolution. The union persists in its quest for a viable solution, guaranteeing that the teachers’ grievances receive sufficient attention.
