KUPPET Urges JSS Teachers to Join Union for Stronger Representation.
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has encouraged Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to become part of their union, positioning itself as the most effective organization for championing their interests.
Amidst this push, some JSS teachers are advocating for the formation of an independent union, separate from the existing dominant ones—KUPPET and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).
During the KUPPET Nyeri branch Annual General Meeting (AGM) at PCEA Nyamachaki Church in Nyeri, KUPPET Deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima stated that their union is the sole organization in the country dedicated to safeguarding the rights of post-primary teachers.
He noted that, by default, JSS teachers should align with KUPPET due to their teaching level.
Nthurima expressed that JSS teachers are essentially members of KUPPET, welcoming them into the union while acknowledging their freedom of choice. He recognized that individuals could choose whether to join, but he pointed out that no other union currently focuses on post-primary teachers.

“JSS teachers are naturally our members. We are welcoming them home to KUPPET, but we respect freedom of choice. People may decide to join or not to join, but no other union currently caters to post-primary teachers,” he said.
Nthurima also advised teachers interested in creating a new union to adhere to the legal procedures necessary for registration. He explained that while JSS teachers have the right to form a union, they must meet the required legal criteria.
He emphasized that the formation of multiple unions should not limit teachers’ freedom of association but noted that such proliferation could be unnecessary.
KUPPET’s appeal for JSS teachers to join comes amid worries that a potential split in representation could weaken the collective strength of teachers’ advocacy.

As this debate unfolds, it remains uncertain whether JSS teachers will choose to join KUPPET or pursue the formation of an independent union.
Nthurima’s statements reflect the ongoing discussion surrounding the representation and rights of JSS teachers within Kenya’s changing education landscape. Stakeholders are striving to ensure that teachers’ voices remain central in the national conversation.
