KUPPET Wants TSC to Employ Intern Teachers on Permanent Terms
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has expressed worry about the recent Employment and Labour Relations Court decision, which banned the employment of primary intern teachers in the country.
In this decision, the court held that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) lacked the authority to hire instructors on internship contracts. Additionally, the Commission can only hire teachers on permanent and pensionable contracts.
In a statement, KUPPET said that the verdict could damage Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), which rely significantly on intern teachers.
As a result, the union is now requesting immediate assurance that the interns’ contracts will be upgraded to permanent and pensionable status.
Furthermore, it encouraged MPs to convene a special session and allocate emergency money to convert intern teachers to permanent positions and support other urgent actions ahead of the country’s school reopening.

The statement indicated that the ruling had cast uncertainty on the legality of the contracts held by 46,000 intern teachers, the majority of whom are employed in Junior Secondary Schools.
The statement underscored the vital role intern teachers play in the operation of JSS, emphasizing that the unresolved status of their contracts could lead to irreversible consequences for service delivery in JSS.
