KUPPET Warns Against Threatening Teachers for Poor KCSE Performance.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Migori County branch has voiced alarm over threats directed at teachers following subpar results in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
According to the branch executive, Mr. Samwel Orwa Jasolo, certain political leaders in the region are pressuring school principals and even threatening their dismissal due to poor performance in some schools.
Mr. Jasolo emphasized that such actions create an atmosphere of unnecessary fear among educators. He specifically mentioned Kibuon Secondary School, where stakeholders have proposed removing the current principal, who has only been in the position for under a year.
Jasolo revealed that Kibuon has seen seven different principals since 2014, which he believes is detrimental to stability and progress.
Jasolo stated that the community should address broader systemic issues affecting schools rather than blaming teachers for the outcomes. He noted that teachers require time and adequate support to deliver results.
The Migori KUPPET secretary underscored the importance of respecting teachers and allowing them to perform their duties without undue interference. He added that mutual cooperation between educators and the community is essential for sustainable improvements.
Addressing Teacher Welfare
The KUPPET official pointed out that motivation is a key factor in improving educational outcomes. He called for the provision of hardship allowances for teachers in Nyatike Sub-County, a region classified as a hardship area.
Jasolo stated that such incentives would encourage teachers to remain committed and enhance the quality of education in the region.
In a separate comment, a Migori County education officer expressed concern over the frequent leadership changes in schools like Kibuon. The officer remarked that this pattern disrupts continuity and negatively impacts school performance.
They stressed the need for a collaborative approach to resolve challenges instead of resorting to threats.

Mr. Jasolo reiterated that teachers must be empowered through respect and adequate resources to succeed in their roles. He called on stakeholders, including political leaders, to focus on addressing systemic problems rather than targeting educators for perceived failures.
In his words, Jasolo emphasized, “The welfare of teachers should be prioritized to enable them to deliver their best. Persistent threats only worsen the situation and deter progress.”
KUPPET Migori branch has pledged to engage relevant authorities to resolve these issues and ensure that teachers are supported in their mission to improve education standards in the county.
