KUPPET Warns Teachers Against Accepting Illegal Internship Offers and Deals

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) have announced plans for a nationwide teachers’ strike set to begin on August 26th.

The unions are demanding that the government comply with a court order and honor the agreements previously signed with them.

Speaking at the union’s annual general meeting in West Pokot County, Deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima confirmed that the strike will proceed as planned unless the government’s obligations are met.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is actively rallying educators across the country to stand firm against government proposals they deem unfavorable.

Nthurima has been leading meetings in all 47 counties, urging teachers to reject any deals offered by the government, particularly criticizing illegal internship offers as part of the ongoing negotiations.

KUPPET’s Secretary General for Gender, Catherine Wambilianga , criticized the government for failing to fulfill its promises since taking office.

She emphasized the need for the government to uphold the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that was signed and is already deposited in the bank.

“The CBA that was written is already deposited in the bank and we expect the the government to pay.”

Wambilianga  also expressed frustration over the delayed employment of young graduates, despite the President’s assurances that they would be hired.

“We expect the government to employ the young people who it promised not just promised but the president made his own pronunciations that he’s going to employ our young people yes this is August coming to end they have not been employed yet.

With the strike date approaching, parents are advised to prepare for potential disruptions as the new school term begins.

Some leaders from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party have also weighed in on the issue, urging the unions to consider alternative solutions to avoid the strike, but tensions remain high as the deadline looms.
