In addition to its media visibility, the leadership of the Vihiga branch was acknowledged for initiating various welfare programs aimed at supporting its members.

These efforts have contributed to the branch’s reputation as a dynamic and influential union.

The prestigious award was presented to the branch’s Executive Secretary, Sabala Inyeni, by Joseph Lunani, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Commerce, Trade, and Cooperatives, during a glittering event at Sosa Cottages in Mbale.

The ceremony, which took place yesterday evening, was organized by the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Vihiga Chapter and attended by Vihiga County Governor, Dr. Wilber Ottichilo.

Call to Action for Teachers

After receiving the award, Sabala urged teachers in the county to formally register their side businesses in order to capitalize on available entrepreneurial opportunities.

He has been an outspoken advocate for teachers’ welfare, often taking bold stands on various issues affecting educators.

At one point, Sabala and other branch officials were removed from the union’s payroll for publicly opposing the controversial Teacher Professional Development (TPD) program.

Additionally, Sabala has shown interest in running for a senior position in the union’s National Executive Board (NEB) during the 2026 national elections.
