KUSNET Ask Teachers to Report to School on Monday as KNUT, KUPPET Push for Strike

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recently held a crucial meeting with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in a final attempt to prevent a nationwide teachers’ strike scheduled to begin on August 26th, just days before the new school term.

Despite the meeting, the situation remains unresolved, leaving teachers uncertain about the start of the term.

Leaders from KNUT and KUPPET were visibly frustrated as they left the meeting, expressing their dissatisfaction with the TSC’s failure to meet their demands.

KNUT officials emphasized that they had expected the TSC to present a renewed commitment to resolving their grievances. Instead, they accused the commission of failing to address any of their five key demands, making the strike inevitable.

KUSNET Satisfied with TSC’s Offer

In contrast, the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) appeared to be content with the TSC’s proposal. KUSNET decided to call off their strike after receiving assurances that their members would receive a monthly allowance of KSh 10,000.

KUSNET leaders mentioned that the TSC had already begun making payments to some of their members, with the rest expected to be paid by the end of August.

“The commission have started paying some of them but we are asking the commission by the end of the month that is August, all who have been deployed to be paid the 10,000 allowance per month.” KUSNET Secretary General James Torome said.

Torome asked teachers to report to their stations on Monday assuring them that the money will hit teachers’ accounts by Friday.

TSC Urges Teachers to Resume Work

TSC Chief Executive Nancy Macharia urged all teachers to report to schools on Monday, claiming that the government had addressed the issues raised by the unions.

She assured teachers that the funds for the implementation of the second phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) had been released, and all concerns had been resolved.

“We are therefore beseeching all our esteemed teachers to report to schools on Monday for the start of the third term now that the government has released funds for the implementation of the second phase of the 2021 2025 CBA and addressed all the issues that the unions had resolved,” said TSC CEO Nancy Macharia.

Despite the TSC’s assurances, KNUT and KUPPET remain in conflict with the commission, leaving teachers in a dilemma. As the new school term approaches, they are left to decide whether to prepare for industrial action or the start of the academic year.
