Maa Elders Ask TSC to Strike Deal With KUPPET to Restore Normalcy in Education Calendar.

The Maasai Council of Elders has urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to reach an agreement with the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) to end the ongoing teachers’ strike.

According to the Council’s Chairman, Kelena Ole Nchoe, the strike is adversely affecting young learners who may have to extend their academic term, despite having reported to school on time. Nchoe emphasized the urgency of resolving the stalemate to allow learning to resume without further disruption.

Nchoe also expressed appreciation for the teachers under the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) who decided to return to school, even though there was an earlier threat of a strike. He shared these thoughts during a press briefing at his office in Narok.

In a separate development, members of KUPPET’s Narok branch staged a protest in Kilgoris town on Thursday. Led by their Branch Secretary, Charles Ngeno, hundreds of teachers marched to the TSC offices to submit their grievances.

The union accused TSC of failing to honor the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). They insisted that they would not return to school until their demands are met.

Unmet Demands and Teacher Promotions

KUPPET highlighted several key issues:

  • The teachers expected their pay slips to reflect the agreed-upon changes from the CBA by January this year, but this has not yet happened.
  • The union is pushing for the confirmation of the 46,000 intern Junior Secondary School teachers, as per a court ruling, to be employed on a permanent and pensionable basis.
  • KUPPET is also calling for the promotion of teachers who have spent more than ten years in the same job group.

Ngeno assured members that the strike is protected and encouraged them to continue boycotting classrooms until their demands are fulfilled.
