Mandera County Expands TTC to Support 500+ Students, Address Teachers Shortage.
The Mandera County Government has initiated the construction of 10 additional classrooms at Mandera Teachers Training College. The project is being directly financed by the Office of the President following a directive issued by President William Ruto during his recent visit to Mandera County.
These new classrooms are expected to accommodate over 500 trainees who are set to enroll at the institution.
Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif, while overseeing the foundation stone laying ceremony, stressed the need for timely completion of the project. He pointed out that its success would allow more students to join the college and pursue teaching careers.
He underscored the necessity of ensuring a conducive learning environment for aspiring teachers and emphasized the significance of delivering the project within schedule.
Addressing Teacher Shortages
Governor Khalif highlighted that Mandera County, along with the broader Northern region, had been significantly impacted by a mass exodus of teachers due to security concerns. He expressed concern over the adverse effects this trend had on the local education system.
He noted that the construction of new classrooms would help rebuild confidence and encourage more educators to remain in Mandera, thus strengthening the region’s education sector.
“The loss of teachers has deeply affected our education sector. With these classrooms, we aim to restore confidence and encourage more educators to stay and teach in Mandera,” he added.
Additionally, he urged students across the county to consider enrolling in teaching colleges, as this would contribute to the overall improvement of education standards.
Once completed, the additional classrooms are expected to be a transformative step for the education sector in Mandera County.
Issack Abdullahi, the principal of Mandera Teachers Training College, commented that the new infrastructure would help ease congestion at the institution.
He expressed optimism about the improved learning conditions and acknowledged the support received for the project, emphasizing its positive impact on students.
