Scoring a D+, D, or D- in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) may limit direct entry into government-sponsored university programs. However, it does not mean the end of academic or career prospects.

Numerous competitive courses are available that can lead to successful careers. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to progressively upgrade their education levels. This article outlines some of the best courses available for D+, D, and D- students in Kenya.

Approved KUCCPS Certificate Courses for D+ & Below Students

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has accredited various Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions and colleges to offer certificate programs. These courses cover a range of disciplines, including Business, Engineering Technology, Information Technology, Building and Construction, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, Library and Information Science, as well as Clothing, Fashion, and Textile.

Business and Related Courses

Kenyan colleges and TVET institutions provide 75 KUCCPS-approved certificate courses in business and related fields. The most sought-after programs include Accounting, Banking and Finance, Sales and Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Secretarial Studies, and Supply Chain Management. Additionally, students can pursue courses in Business Administration, Credit Management, Human Resource Management, Cooperative Management, and Project Management. Institutions such as Belgut, Bushiangala, Riragia, Aldai, Bunyala, Gatundu South, and Gitwebe TVET offer these programs.

Engineering Technology

Students who did not qualify for diploma or degree programs can enroll in one of the 99 KUCCPS-approved certificate courses in engineering. Some of the most popular options are Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electronic Engineering. Polytechnics offering these courses include Eldoret, Kisii, Kisumu, Kitale, Nyeri, and Sigalagala. Additionally, TVET institutions such as Weru, Webuye, Turbo, Tigania East, Shamberembere, Runyenjes, and Ugunja also provide these engineering programs.

Building and Construction

Several certificate programs in building and construction are available, including Construction Technology, Concrete Construction, Construction Foreperson, Land Survey, and Road Construction. Eldoret Polytechnic is among the top institutions offering these courses. Other training institutes providing similar programs include Karen, Katine, Konoin, and Ol’lessos, along with polytechnics in Kisumu, Kitale, Meru, Sigalagala, and Bungoma.

Information Technology (IT)

Students interested in IT can enroll in certificate courses such as Computer Programming, Information Communication and Technology (ICT), and Computer Science. These courses are available at Ahmed Shahame Mwidani, Aldai, Bureti, and Coast Institute of Technology. Additional TVET institutions offering IT-related programs include Eldama Ravine, Chamasiri, Chepsirei, Butula, Bunyala, and Bureti.

Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy

A minimum KCSE grade of D is required to apply for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy courses in various TVET institutions. Some of the accredited institutions include Kakrao, Kandara, Kasarani, Kendege, Kieni, Kipsoen, Kiptaragon, and Kitutu Masaba. Other locations offering these courses are Lodwar, Limuru, Mathioya, Mbeere North, Molo, Mwala, Nachu, Nuu, and Okame TVET institutions.

Library and Information Science

Students with a mean grade of D or higher can enroll in a Certificate in Information Science at institutions such as Belgut, Ebukanga, Eldama Ravine, Kajiado West, Kerio Valley, Kipkabus, Lodwar, and Masinga. Additionally, the Certificate in Library Archives and Information Management is available at these institutions, as well as Eldoret, Meru, Sigalagala, and Bungoma Polytechnics.

Clothing, Fashion, and Textile

Certificate programs in this category include Fashion Design, Clothing Technology, and Tailoring and Dressmaking. Some of the institutions offering these programs are Baringo Technical College, Belgut TVET, Eldoret Polytechnic, Emining Technical Training Institute, Friends College Kaimosi, and Keroka Technical Training Institute
