Mary Hill Girls School to Raise Ksh 100M for Modern Dining Hall Construction .
Mary Hill Girls School, one of the top-performing schools in Kiambu County, is grappling with infrastructural challenges due to its growing student population. With approximately 2,200 students, the existing dining hall, constructed years ago when the student numbers were much lower, is no longer sufficient.
Currently, students are forced to eat their meals in shifts, often standing around the old dining hall. This has prompted the school management and board to seek a solution.
The school has launched the “Mile to Dine” initiative, a fundraiser involving a walk to Mount Kilimambogo.
The aim is to generate at least Ksh 100 million to build a modern dining hall. According to the school management, this facility will include additional rooms designed to alleviate the challenges faced by both students and staff.
The management highlighted the difficult conditions students face during meal times. When the weather is hot, students endure the scorching sun, and when it rains, they get drenched. This affects not only their comfort but also their ability to focus on academics.
Similarly, essential service providers, including the support staff, often experience extreme weather conditions while performing their duties. These issues underscore the urgent need for a new facility.
Enhancing Efficiency and Comfort
The proposed dining hall will include an inbuilt kitchen, a significant improvement over the current arrangement. Presently, cooks must carry food from an external kitchen to the dining area, which becomes problematic during bad weather.
This has resulted in food getting wet, and students returning to class soaked and uncomfortable. The new dining hall aims to streamline meal services and ensure hygienic and efficient operations.
The current dining setup also impacts time management. Students must wait for five-minute intervals between shifts to allow space for others to eat, which reduces time for other activities.
The new dining hall, with a capacity to accommodate 3,000 students, will enable all students to eat together comfortably, fostering a better learning environment.

As a center of excellence with a target mean score of 10.6, the school emphasizes the importance of creating a conducive environment for the students. The school management expressed their commitment to supporting the girls so they can achieve their academic goals comfortably and efficiently.
Tomorrow’s hike to Mount Kilimambogo is the first step in the “Mile to Dine” initiative, serving as a mini hike. The ultimate goal is to summit Mount Kenya in March, marking the culmination of the fundraising efforts.
The school community remains optimistic about achieving their goal and ensuring the comfort and success of their students.
