Men Encouraged to Pursue Beauty Courses.

Education stakeholders have urged men to pursue cosmetology courses as job opportunities in other sectors diminish.

They highlighted the beauty industry, traditionally dominated by women, as a promising field that could offer self-employment opportunities for young men.

This appeal was made during the fourth graduation ceremony at Embu Glamourland Technical and Vocational Training Institute.

Key speakers stressed the need for cultural shifts and mindset changes about beauty-related courses.

The Chairman of the Board of Management, Rev. Manase Nguo, speaking at the event held at Embu Stadium, pointed out the rapid growth of the beauty industry, encouraging young men to seize this opportunity.

He emphasized that many men who have taken such courses have successfully opened their own hair and beauty salons, with some becoming employers.

The rise in drug abuse and alcoholism among young men, driven by frustration from unemployment, was mentioned as a concern, with Nguo suggesting that the beauty industry could offer a solution by providing earning opportunities.

Support for Male Students

The institution’s manager, Elizabeth Njeri, announced a 20% fee discount for men enrolling in beauty courses.

She encouraged parents to consider enrolling their children in short courses that could equip them with daily skills.

Njeri suggested that a young man entering university could, for example, learn barbering, while girls might take up nail polishing.

Dr. Rahab Gathuci, a lecturer at Mt Kenya University and the event’s chief guest, attributed the low enrollment of boys in beauty courses to ingrained cultural perceptions that classify such careers as feminine.

She emphasized the need to dismantle these stereotypes to allow boys access to the rapidly expanding beauty industry.

Ephantus Mugendi, the TVET Chief Officer, representing the County government, revealed that Sh15 million had been allocated in scholarships for 300 young people in technical courses.

Additionally, after graduation, the County plans to provide them with tools to help them start their own businesses.
