In total, 59,575 candidates were assessed in 226 qualifications across all levels, covering 2,929 units of competency. This figure marked a substantial 196% increase from the November/December 2023 assessment period.

Government Commitment to TVET Advancement

The government has emphasized TVET as a core element of Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). CS Ogamba stated that substantial efforts are underway to enhance the sector’s capacity, accessibility, and quality.

Key initiatives include:

  • Competency-Based Curriculum Development: Over 400 competency-based curricula have been developed in collaboration with industry experts, ensuring skills taught align directly with job market demands.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): A cornerstone of CBET’s success, RPL certifies skills acquired outside formal education, allowing skilled individuals to receive credentials that accurately reflect their competencies. This pathway promotes inclusion by facilitating access to formal employment, career advancement, or further training.
  • TVET Infrastructure and Resource Investment: To support quality education, increased budget allocations focus on infrastructure, modern equipment, and educator training.

Training and Capacity Building for TVET Trainers

The State has heavily invested in upskilling TVET trainers and assessors, collaborating with international organizations to provide extensive training in CBET methodologies.

This ensures that instructors are well-equipped to deliver competency-based training effectively.

CS Ogamba encouraged all institutions to register as RPL assessment centers with the TVET Authority, furthering inclusivity within the technical education system.

This step aims to ensure that all talents and competencies are formally recognized and valued within Kenya’s TVET framework.
