Ministry of Education Revises Half Term Break Schedule
The Ministry of Education has announced that boarding schools can release students for the half term break starting Monday, June 24. This is a sudden alteration to the school calendar as previously, the break was set to commence on Wednesday, June 26.
In a memo addressed to school principals, the Ministry explained that the early release is intended to provide students and parents ample time to organize travel plans in light of the anticipated Finance Bill protests on Tuesday.
Consequently, some principals have informed parents to pick up their children starting today; otherwise, the next available pick-up time will be Wednesday.
Day school students will begin their half term break after completing the academic day today.
Since the previous Tuesday, a significant number of Kenyan citizens, predominantly from Generation Z, have been protesting against the Finance Bill 2024 proposals.
These protests escalated on Thursday, spreading across various cities and towns, including Eldoret, Nanyuki, and Nyeri.
At the end of May, the Ministry had revised the half term dates for the second term to June 26 to June 30. This adjustment was necessary due to the delayed opening caused by flooding.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang mentioned in a letter that the change required further adjustments to planned activities and schedules.
