Ministry of Health Directs Parents to Confirm Dependents via SHA Platform.
Parents have been directed to log into the Social Health Authority (SHA) system to verify the details of their dependents and confirm their birth certificates.
Health Director General Dr. Patrick Amoth, during a briefing on the SHA rollout three months after its implementation, announced that the Ministry of Health has integrated the registration system with key Government of Kenya (GoK) data sources to improve accuracy.
Dr. Amoth explained that the system now synchronizes with databases such as the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), civil registry, and the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).
This integration aims to resolve issues surrounding the capture of birth certificates, ensuring that all dependents’ details are accurately recorded.
The directive follows complaints from parents and other Kenyans about difficulties encountered during SHA registration. Many reported delays in obtaining crucial documents like birth notifications or certificates, which hindered their ability to complete the process.
Additionally, technical issues, such as long waits for the One-Time Password (OTP) required for verification, further contributed to frustrations.
By connecting SHA with existing government databases, the Ministry intends to address these challenges. Dr. Amoth emphasized that parents should log in to verify and update their children’s information promptly to avoid further issues.
Growth in SHA Membership
Dr. Amoth shared progress on SHA’s rollout, revealing that over 17.8 million Kenyans have registered, including 13.2 million new members and 4.6 million who transitioned from NHIF. He expressed optimism about continued growth, encouraging more citizens to join the program.
SHA reforms aim to alleviate financial burdens caused by out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. “Over 17.8 million Kenyans are now part of SHA, which represents a significant step towards reducing financial hardship related to healthcare,” Dr. Amoth noted.
Dr. Amoth also highlighted the progress in facility onboarding, with over 7,900 facilities signing manual contracts, 2,602 completing e-contracting, and 1,753 finalizing their agreements. He urged facilities with incomplete details to address these promptly to enhance service delivery.
The Ministry acknowledged delays in reimbursements to healthcare providers and called for measures to expedite the process, ensuring timely and efficient healthcare delivery for all SHA members.
