Missing Marks: UoN Students Storm Dean’s Office, Protest Over Graduation List Exclusion

On Thursday, fourth-year students from the University of Nairobi (UoN) took drastic action by storming their dean’s office at the Lower Kabete Campus.

The protest arose after their names were omitted from the graduation list, a critical issue for students nearing the culmination of their academic journey.

The affected students expressed their frustration, stating they had met all the necessary graduation requirements.

Viral videos captured the moment the students forcefully entered the dean’s office to air their grievances. Efforts by security guards to block the students were unsuccessful, as the group overpowered them.

Lecturers Blamed for Missing Marks

The students attributed the exclusion of their names to missing marks, speculating that errors by some lecturers were responsible for the mishap.

They demanded clarity on why their names had been left out, citing missing marks as a recurring issue in public universities. This problem has been a significant barrier for many students, often delaying their graduation.

In previous years, the government pledged to investigate and address the issue of missing marks in universities.

This challenge has disproportionately affected students in public institutions, causing delays in their academic progress.

The government has emphasized that it is unjust for students to miss graduation opportunities due to administrative or lecturer-related errors.

Nationwide University Protests

In October 2023, students from Multimedia University similarly disrupted learning activities while protesting missing marks. Universities have frequently attributed this problem to part-time lecturers who leave before submitting student scores.

This recurring issue has drawn attention to the need for systemic reforms in higher education institutions to ensure timely processing of academic records.
