MKU Achieves International Accreditation for Medical Degrees in US, UK, and Canada.
Mount Kenya University (MKU) has reached a significant milestone with the international recognition of its medical degrees by the medical councils and accreditation bodies in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
This recognition opens up new pathways for its graduates to practice, specialise, and secure employment in some of the most esteemed healthcare systems globally.
This achievement follows the April 2025 inclusion of the MKU Medical School in the World Directory of Medical Schools. The directory lists medical schools deemed acceptable by key international medical authorities. The listing has enabled graduates of MKU to qualify for various certification processes necessary for practising medicine abroad.
According to the US Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), graduates from MKU are now eligible to apply for ECFMG Certification and sit for examinations.
The ECFMG assesses the credentials of international medical graduates who wish to work in the United States. This certification is mandatory for such graduates to proceed to Step Three of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and acquire an unrestricted licence to practise in the country.
The World Directory of Medical Schools also affirms that institutions listed are recognised by Canada’s provincial and territorial medical authorities. Therefore, MKU graduates meet the prerequisites for applying for services and assessments by the Medical Council of Canada.
The directory specifies that a candidate’s degree must come from a listed institution with a Canadian sponsor note and be earned within the approved graduation years. The degree title should also appear in the Reference Guide for Medical Education Credentials.
UK GMC Endorsement and Africa’s Struggles
The General Medical Council (GMC) of the UK granted recognition to MKU Medical School in 2024. The GMC is responsible for setting and maintaining standards for medical training and professional performance.
Historically, doctors trained in Africa have faced numerous hurdles when seeking employment abroad, including additional examinations and bridging programs. This recognition is expected to significantly ease those challenges for MKU graduates.
The recognition of MKU’s medical degrees signifies a turning point for Kenya’s higher education landscape, particularly in the medical field. In addition to MKU, other Kenyan universities with medical schools listed in the World Directory include Egerton University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, University of Nairobi, Kenya Methodist University, Kenyatta University, Kisii University, Maseno University, Moi University, and Masinde Muliro University.
According to MKU Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, this international recognition validates the institution’s quality of training. He noted that the East African Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council had already affirmed this quality.
He added that such recognition allows MKU graduates to access employment opportunities beyond Kenyan borders and acknowledged the university staff for their dedication.

MKU marked another major step forward in 2021 by graduating its first cohort of 29 doctors, who had embarked on their six-year training journey in 2015. These graduates were part of a group of 6,556 who were conferred degrees during the university’s 19th graduation ceremony.
As part of its ongoing commitment to quality healthcare training, Mount Kenya University has invested KSh300 million in a collaboration with Thika Level Five Hospital, further enhancing practical training and healthcare service delivery.
