MKU Nursing School Reaccredited, Setting the Stage for Expansion.
Mount Kenya University (MKU)’s School of Nursing has received a significant endorsement for its growth agenda with the award of a re-accreditation certificate from the Nursing Council of Kenya. This milestone highlights the institution’s dedication to delivering top-tier nursing education that surpasses regulatory expectations.
The Nursing Council of Kenya Registrar and CEO, Dr. Lister Onsongo, emphasized the institution’s exemplary standards during the presentation of the certificate.
The council recognized the university’s investment in ultra-modern skills laboratories, equipped with high-fidelity mannequins, as a benchmark for quality nursing training. Dr. Onsongo noted that this level of investment reflects MKU’s commitment to excellence.
The council will revisit the institution in five years for another evaluation and encouraged MKU to adhere to all critical and non-critical requirements to maintain its accreditation status.
Dr. Onsongo further acknowledged the university’s efforts to apply for an increased number of nursing students, aligning with the growing local and international demand for trained nurses.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi expressed the institution’s gratitude for the reaccreditation, affirming MKU’s commitment to integrating advanced technology and research-driven methods into its nursing programs.
He highlighted the university’s collaborative relationship with the Nursing Council as a cornerstone of maintaining high educational standards.
The Vice-Chancellor lauded the collective efforts of staff, students, and partners in achieving this success. He invited aspiring nurses to join MKU’s program, describing it as a legacy of excellence in nursing education.
Impact and Expansion
Since receiving initial approval in 2012, MKU has produced over 1,200 qualified nurses who have made significant contributions to healthcare locally and internationally. The university boasts two state-of-the-art nursing skills laboratories that serve both nursing and other medical students.
Prof. Jaganyi recalled that the first re-accreditation was successfully conducted in 2017, making the latest achievement the second such milestone. He emphasized that this reaccreditation supports the university’s goal of increasing the number of nursing students admitted per intake.

“Alot has been done by our staff, students, and partners to achieve this success of our nursing program.
“We also welcome aspiring nurses to join our program and be part of a legacy of excellence in nursing education at MKU,” he said.
