Moi University Sets New Reopening Date After Unrest.
Moi University’s management, alongside Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala, announced that the university would reopen on Friday, November 8, after being closed for a month due to student unrest.
The Vice Chancellor, Isaac Kosgey, stated that students are expected to return on this date following a series of ongoing consultations with key stakeholders. These meetings aim to ensure a smooth resumption of activities.
The Vice Chancellor shared in a memo that the University Board of Management had convened with the University and Academic Staff Union (UASU) officials on Sunday.
The meeting, which also included student representatives from the Kenya University Students Union (KUSU), adopted a consultative approach toward addressing the issues that led to the closure.
Meetings involving university management and stakeholders will continue through November 5 to lay the foundation for a return to normalcy.

The final meeting, slated for Wednesday, will include the University Council Chairperson, the National Secretary General of UASU Constantine Wesonga, and the National Secretary General of KUSU.
During this meeting, key considerations, such as the signing of the Return to Work Formula (RTWF) between the university management and student representatives, will be ratified.
State Department’s Involvement
Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala mentioned that officials from the State Department for Higher Education would be present to witness the reopening.
She added that the department would be at Moi University on November 8 to welcome the students back, underscoring the administration’s commitment to restoring stability at the institution.
The closure of Moi University was prompted by student protests on October 3. Students were frustrated by the Vice Chancellor’s decision to shut down the university, viewing it as a violation of their right to education.
During the demonstrations, they demanded the immediate resignation of the Vice Chancellor, accusing him of poor management, which included ignoring the grievances of school workers.

In response to the unrest, the Vice Chancellor ordered the indefinite closure of the university. This decision came after a Senate meeting that concluded the industrial action by staff and subsequent student unrest warranted a suspension of teaching and learning activities.
The statement from the VC highlighted that the Senate’s resolution effectively halted the academic activities of the first semester for the 2024/2025 academic year.
