Mombasa County Partners with Al Khalidi Foundation to Improve Education and Health.
The Mombasa County Department of Education and Digital Transformation is collaborating with the Al Khalidi Quality and Sustainable Development Foundation, a non-profit organization, to elevate education and health standards in the region.
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Mbwarali Kame stated that the county plans to formalize this partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement will mirror similar collaborations already established with the Al Khair Foundation and Rahma Worldwide.
Kame also announced that the county is working on a plan to integrate madrasas and Sunday school teachers into the county payroll. A draft bill is under development within the Department of Education.
Once reviewed by departmental officials, it will proceed to the county executive committee for approval before being presented to the county assembly. If passed, this initiative will fulfill a campaign promise by the Governor.
Al Khalidi Foundation’s Vision
Jassim Al-Ansari, Managing Director of the Al Khalidi Foundation, expressed optimism about the partnership, emphasizing that the MoU will create a framework for collaborative efforts in education and health.
He highlighted the importance of shared values and principles in fostering sustainable development in Mombasa.
The foundation is focused on delivering long-term, quality projects and is currently discussing future programs and initiatives.
To inspire youth, the foundation will sponsor the winner of this year’s Qur’an memorization competition with a trip to Mecca during the holy month of Ramadhan.
In memory of the late philanthropist Hasmukh Patel, known as “Mombasa Cement,” the foundation awarded a $3,000 (approximately KSh 388,500) research grant. This research aims to explore ways other foundations can complement Patel’s contributions, particularly in philanthropy.

Legacy of Hasmukh Patel
The foundation initially planned to expand the cancer center at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH), but this project had already been completed by Patel.
Al-Ansari described Patel as a principled individual committed to using his wealth to uplift the less fortunate. He emphasized the importance of documenting Patel’s contributions to inspire future generations.

Dr. Fathima Azmiya appreciated the foundation’s support for the research, noting that Patel’s extensive philanthropic work remains largely unknown and could benefit the entire country.
This collaboration between the Mombasa County government and the Al Khalidi Foundation marks a significant step toward sustainable community development. By fostering education, health, and social empowerment, both entities aim to create lasting positive impacts for the residents of Mombasa.
