Mount Kenya University’s (MKU) to Offer PhD in law.

Mount Kenya University’s (MKU) School of Law is set to launch doctoral studies, becoming the second private university in the country to offer this programme.

This initiative aligns with the university’s broader goal of enhancing access to legal education across different academic levels, from Diploma and Bachelor’s degrees to Master’s and Doctoral studies.

According to the School’s Dean, Dr. Hezekiel Oira, the decision to introduce the doctoral programme stems from the overwhelming success of its Master of Laws (LLM) course, which has been effectively delivered through a blended learning approach.

Addressing stakeholders at a meeting held at the university’s main campus in Thika town, he emphasized that this new development will significantly benefit legal professionals looking to further their academic qualifications within the country.

The dean highlighted the institution’s progress since the School of Law was established in 2009, following approvals from the then Commission of Higher Education.

The school was later accredited by the Council of Legal Education in 2022 to offer the LLM programme. Over the years, more than 2,500 students have been admitted to its Degree programmes, with an additional 1,600 enrolling in Diploma courses.

“We have been on track since 2009, when the School of Law was established after approvals from the then Commission of Higher Education before being accredited to offer the LLM programme.”

In addition to launching the doctoral programme, the Law School is preparing to host students and faculty members from Mount Kigali University in March as part of an academic exchange initiative between the two sister institutions.

Dr. Oira explained that the visiting students will engage in interactive lectures, moot court sessions, and educational visits to key legal institutions in Kenya, such as the Judiciary, Parliament, regulatory bodies, and law firms.

He further stated that the exchange programme is structured to familiarize the participants with Kenya’s legal framework, judicial processes, and practical applications of the law in various settings.

He noted that this initiative will not only benefit the visiting students but also enrich the learning experience for those at MKU’s Parklands campus by fostering comparative legal discussions, expanding perspectives on international legal principles, and strengthening professional networks.

Through engagements with legal scholars and practitioners, students will gain valuable insights that complement their academic journey.
