MP Demands TSC’s Immediate Replacement of 60 Transferred Teachers in Turkana.
Turkana North MP Ekwom Nabuin has strongly criticized the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for transferring over 60 teachers from Turkana County without appointing substitutes.
He emphasized that the move severely impacts education in the region, depriving students of their right to quality learning. The legislator urged the commission to take swift action to rectify the shortage.
Nabuin condemned the transfers, stating that the decision had left schools understaffed. He insisted that all teachers employed in Turkana had been relocated elsewhere, violating established policies.
He demanded that for every teacher removed, a replacement should be assigned immediately. He also linked the issue to alleged misconduct by a retiring TSC official.
MPs across Turkana County have unified in opposition to what they perceive as an ongoing trend of unfair external teacher transfers without replacements. Nabuin reiterated that such actions hinder access to education, emphasizing the urgency of filling the vacancies left by the relocated educators.
Before Nabuin’s remarks, Michael Ejikon, the Secretary-General of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) for Turkana County, had also expressed concerns.
He accused TSC of failing to ensure continuity in learning by transferring teachers without providing replacements. He described the situation as a deliberate obstruction of education for children in marginalized areas, directly contradicting government policies.
Ejikon pointed out that in some cases, entire teaching staff from specific schools had been relocated, leaving students stranded.
The widespread frustration has led local leaders and education stakeholders to call on TSC to address the crisis with urgency. They insist that fairness must be prioritized to ensure students in Turkana are not disadvantaged compared to other regions.
Region-Wide Outrage Over Teacher Transfers
The teacher transfers have sparked significant unrest across the county, with stakeholders demanding that TSC implement measures to restore learning in affected schools.
The call for immediate replacements has intensified, as education leaders emphasize that the region cannot afford to have schools operate without adequate teaching staff.
Meanwhile, in December 2024, the TSC declared 19,943 vacancies for various managerial roles, including positions for senior teachers, deputy principals, senior lecturers, headteachers, senior headteachers, senior principals, and chief principals.

Additionally, the TSC has opened applications for junior secondary school teaching positions. However, eligibility is restricted to currently employed primary school teachers under TSC.
Applicants must possess a diploma or degree in education, alongside a minimum Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) grade of C+, and at least a C+ in each of their two teaching subjects or an equivalent qualification.
