MP Pushes for Nationhood Science as a Core Subject in Schools.
Suba South Member of Parliament Caroli Omondi has suggested the inclusion of a new subject, ‘Nationhood Science’, in the national curriculum to enhance Kenya’s political maturity. He emphasized the importance of integrating the subject across all academic levels, starting from kindergarten to higher education institutions.
During an interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday, April 22, Omondi disclosed that he would present his proposal to the Education Committee on the same day. His goal is to make the subject mandatory in all schools to cultivate a deeper understanding of national values among Kenyan youth.
The MP argued that the country should take cues from nations like Sweden and Singapore, which have established similar educational approaches. He believes such programs have contributed to their citizens’ awareness and orderly conduct, and sees a parallel path for Kenya through ‘Nationhood Science’.
According to Omondi, introducing the subject would breathe life into Kenya’s national values and governance principles, such as patriotism, national unity, devolution, and rule of law, as outlined in Article 10 of Chapter 12 of the Constitution. He stressed that embedding these values in the education system is crucial for long-term national cohesion and responsibility.
This is not the first initiative to include Nationhood in the curriculum. In December last year, lawmakers introduced the draft Education Laws (Amendment) Bill 2024, which aimed to make Nationhood an examinable subject by amending existing education laws.
Omondi also expressed concern over the prevailing political culture in Kenya. He observed that politics is increasingly viewed as a lifestyle choice, a trend that could negatively influence future leaders. This, he suggested, stems from a deeper systemic issue within the country’s political framework.
He pointed out that many individuals in the current leadership landscape appear unfit for their roles, attributing this to the failings of political parties. He explained that political leaders often cite outdated political ideologies rather than focusing on leadership as a vehicle for public interest and collective good.
The MP concluded by stating that Kenya’s diplomatic ties have suffered due to the poor quality of leadership at the helm. He underscored the need for a comprehensive transformation of the nation’s political mindset to restore both domestic governance and international credibility.
