Nakuru High School Shut Down Indefinitely After Student Unrest.

Nakuru High School has been indefinitely closed after students staged a violent protest on the night of Sunday, February 9. The unrest erupted over several grievances, primarily centered on dissatisfaction with the food provided at the institution.

Reports indicate that the well-coordinated demonstration commenced at approximately 8:50 pm and persisted for at least six hours. Law enforcement officers were eventually called in to quell the situation and restore order.

Before the intervention of authorities, students vandalized various facilities, including the administration block, classrooms, and dormitories. Additionally, they forcefully accessed the dining hall and storage room, stealing food items. Some students immediately consumed the stolen food, according to reports.

It has been revealed that the discontent stemmed partly from the removal of a meal from the daily schedule. Students, who were accustomed to having tea and bread in the mid-morning, expressed displeasure after the administration eliminated it.

They also protested against the newly introduced card system for purchasing items at the school canteen, as they preferred cash transactions.

Another major complaint was the administration’s decision to remove milk from the morning tea, which students felt disregarded their welfare. Furthermore, they were frustrated by the delay in upgrading entertainment facilities, despite having contributed a small fee towards the improvement project.

Following the prolonged standoff, peace was eventually restored through the intervention of the police and Nakuru County Director of Education (CDE), Victoria Mulili.

By Monday, February 10, the school had been deserted as students were sent home. Reports suggest that the institution may remain closed for at least a week.

This incident is the latest in a series of student unrest cases. Just two weeks earlier, students from Teremi High School in Bungoma County staged a protest over declining KCSE examination performance. In their demonstration, they targeted the principal’s residence, damaging his house and vehicle.
