National Intelligence and Research University (NIRU): All You Need to Know About.
On November 5, President William Ruto formally awarded a charter to the National Intelligence and Research University (NIRU) at State House, Nairobi.
The new institution is now recognized as Kenya’s inaugural university owned and operated by the National Intelligence Service (NIS). Located in Nairobi, NIRU will open to students seeking advanced learning opportunities in a range of accredited courses.
NIRU will be managed by a Board of Management, a Council, and a Vice-Chancellor (VC), with Doctor Christopher Chumba serving as the first VC to lead the institution’s academic and administrative functions.
Following its separation from the National Defence University (NDU), which is closely associated with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), NIRU will assume control over various constituent colleges.
Key among these are the Kenya Military Academy in Lanet, Nakuru; the Joint Command and Staff College; the International Peace and Support Training Center in Embakasi; and the Defence Forces Technical College.
NIRU will also oversee the Centre for Security Studies, further expanding its influence on security-related education and research.

The institution aims to establish itself as a premier center for intelligence training and action-oriented research across Kenya and beyond.
Emphasizing intelligence-focused academic programs, NIRU seeks to enhance security training nationwide, equipping learners with the skills needed to address emerging security challenges.
