National Schools to Offer All Career Pathways, Education CS Ogamba Confirms.
All national schools will be required to implement the three senior school career pathways, namely Social Sciences, Arts and Sports, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), due to their robust capacity, qualified staffing, and developed infrastructure, as announced by the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Ogamba.
The Ministry of Education has decided to eliminate the regional categorisation of schools starting next year when learners currently in Grade 9 move to Grade 10 in January. Instead of being identified by regional classifications, schools will now be designated as either triple pathway or double pathway institutions, based on the number of career options they can support.
Mr Ogamba stated that the government has already put in place comprehensive guidelines to manage the transition and student placement into Grade 10 in January 2026. He noted that eliminating the classification of schools into national, extra-county, county, and sub-county levels is central to the transition framework, with plans underway to strengthen infrastructure to support all three pathways.
The Cabinet Secretary reminded school leaders that they had participated in the drafting of these guidelines, which were also reviewed through public dialogues held across the country last month. Addressing a conference for national school principals in Mombasa, he urged them to embrace the triple pathway model, citing their strong performance history, extensive facilities, and well-trained staff. Under this model, schools are also encouraged to incorporate both boarding and day options.

“Based on this, I urge all of the schools represented here to adopt the triple pathway category owing to your superior status in staffing, infrastructure and history of academic performance. Under the arrangement, we will also encourage schools to offer boarding and the day sections,” said Mr Ogamba.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Education is set to host a National Conversation on the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system in Kenya today at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi. The event will bring together key government officials led by the Cabinet Secretary for Education, principal secretaries, curriculum developers, development partners, educators, parents, and learners to review the CBC’s progress and discuss future directions.
