Nationwide CBC Training for 7,000 Senior Secondary School Principals Begins in Mombasa.
The roll-out of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) continues to gain traction with the commencement of nationwide training for 7,000 Senior Secondary School Principals. The objective is to ensure a seamless shift for Grade Nine learners transitioning into Senior Secondary Schools by 2026.
In Mombasa, more than 100 Principals from both public and private institutions gathered at Coast Girls’ Secondary School for a session organized by the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA). This event marked the beginning of a broader strategy to prepare schools for the CBC implementation.
The training was designed to equip Principals with essential knowledge and leadership skills to oversee the transition and guide the new learners effectively. Emphasis was placed on the role of Principals in shaping student experiences and navigating the demands of CBC.
The training content focused on three CBC pathways for Grade 10 learners: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Arts and Sports; and Social Sciences. Participants were expected to understand the structure and subject requirements for each track, especially the STEM route.
Preparing for CBC Pathways
Principals were informed of the critical importance of understanding each pathway thoroughly. This knowledge would enable them to advise students appropriately and support curriculum requirements, particularly those related to the STEM pathway, which demands specific school infrastructure and resources.
“The Principals are trained to understand what the tracks and pathways involve. By the end of the training, they should be well-equipped with information on STEM, other pathways, and the relevant subjects.”
The sessions outlined not only curriculum changes but also the broader adjustments required for managing the shift from the traditional 8-4-4 system to CBC. The training aims to enhance the Principals’ readiness and leadership for this educational transition.
The Principal of Bombolulu Secondary School acknowledged the importance of the training, explaining that the CBC structure differs greatly from the previous system and is better aligned with the diverse needs of learners. He observed that it helps Principals support students more effectively while advancing both national and individual development goals.
He also noted that the government encourages at least 60 per cent of students to engage in STEM subjects to address gaps in science proficiency. The training is expected to empower school leaders to meet these targets and promote student success.

A Physics trainer from Kiambu County stressed that Principals must leave the sessions with a full understanding of incoming Grade 10 learners and the subjects available. In addition, further training is planned for teachers to ensure they, too, are prepared for the CBC shift.
The overall purpose of this training initiative is to build the capacity of school heads and ensure a well-coordinated national approach to CBC implementation.
