Ndindi Nyoro Advocates for Mathematics as a Core Subject in Senior Secondary Education.
The ongoing national debate regarding the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and the proposal to make mathematics optional at the Senior Secondary School (SSS) level has sparked varied reactions from education stakeholders and policymakers.
While some support the Ministry of Education’s proposal, others argue that mathematics should remain a core subject.
Kiharu Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro, has emphasized that mathematics is essential in various aspects of life and should be retained as a major subject through senior secondary education.
Speaking at a prize-giving ceremony at Kahuhia Girls High School in Kahuro Sub-County, he urged for its continued inclusion in the curriculum.
Nyoro highlighted the significance of mathematics in equipping students with critical skills necessary for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
He noted that STEM courses play a central role in innovation and global opportunities, and Kenya must align its education system accordingly to remain competitive.
The legislator stressed that the modern world is rapidly embracing technological innovations and digital transformations, all of which require basic mathematical knowledge. He warned that making mathematics optional in senior secondary schools could hinder the country’s progress in these areas.

Balancing Arts and Sciences
Although he studied arts himself, Nyoro acknowledged the value of both arts and sciences. However, he reiterated that mathematics and science subjects are crucial in preparing students for the evolving demands of modern technology and global advancements.
Nyoro urged education stakeholders and policymakers to recognize the growing reliance on technological and scientific advancements, where mathematics is a key component.
He advocated for maintaining mathematics as a fundamental part of the curriculum alongside other sciences to adequately prepare students for future challenges and opportunities.
